Continuing the work of the successful ICAD `92, `94, and `96 meetings, ICAD `97 will be held on November 2-5, 1997 in Palo Alto, California, USA. ICAD is a forum for presenting research on the use of sound to display dat a, monitor systems, and provide enhanced user interfaces for computers and virtual reality systems. It is unique in its singular focus on auditory dis plays, and the array of perception, technology, design and application area s that these encompass. Like its predecessors, ICAD `97 will be a single-tr ack conference. Attendance is open to all, with no membership or affiliatio n requirements.

There are three conference hotels. The Holiday Inn is more expensive b ut provides transportation to Xerox PARC. The Stanford Terrace Inn is less expensive but does not provide transportation. The Mermaid Inn is of potent ial interest to students on limited budgets. ICAD will provide transportati on to and from the Mermaid Inn and Xerox PARC.
The conference rate for the Holiday Inn is $139(single)/$139(double) p lus tax per night. To make reservations, call 1 800 874-3516 and request th e ICAD (International Conference on Auditory Display) rate. They will provi de transportation to the conference.
The conference rate for the Stanford Terrace Inn is $94(single)/$104(d ouble) plus tax per night. To make reservations, call 1 800 729-0332 and re quest the ICAD (International Conference on Auditory Display) rate. They wi ll NOT provide transportation to the conference.
The cutoff date for the conference rates at all of th ese hotels is October 1st.
None of the hotels provides shuttle service to/from regional airports. They suggest arranging transport on the Santa Clara Airporter. The fare fr om the San Francisco International Airport or the San Jose International Ai rport to these hotels is $18 one-way. You can call the shuttle service at + 1 415-771-7710 to arrange transport in advance, or simply call the shuttle upon arriving at the airport.
It is possible to fly into San Jose airport as Palo Alto is about equi distant from SF and SJ airports. SJ is also somewhat more convenient as it' s smaller. However, in general the cheapest airfares probably go through Sa n Francisco.
ICAD `97, is a program of the International Community for Auditory Dis play. ICAD is a not-for-profit corporation created to support research, edu cation and community formation in the emerging field of auditory display. T he primary projects of ICAD are the conferences, the listserve (icad-reques t@santafe.edu) and the ICAD Web site (http://www.santafe.edu/http://www.santafe.edu/~icad). Since auditory display researchers come from a wide variety of disciplinary, pro fessional, and geographical backgrounds, ICAD seeks, above all, to facilita te communication across boundaries. A membership organization founded in 1 996, ICAD welcomes participation in its programs and governance. For more i nformation about ICAD please contact Gregory Kramer at kramer@listen.com. P>
The Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) performs pioneering researc h that covers a broad spectrum of research fields ranging from electronic m aterials and device research through computer-based systems and software, t o research into work practices and technologies in use. The center's missio n is to pursue those technologies that relate to Xerox's current and emergi ng businesses.
Located in the Stanford University Industrial Park in the heart of Sil icon Valley, PARC was charged upon its founding in 1970 to be the "arc hitect of the information age." Since then it has delivered into use s uch significant pieces of the current information infrastructure as laser printers, graphical user in terfaces, object-oriented programming languages, and Ethernet local area ne tworks. PARC has contributed to user interfaces, electronic components, emb edded software and architectures for each new line of Xerox copiers, printe rs and systems reprographics products.
