ICAD is a not-for-profit corporation created to support research, education and community formation in the emerging field of auditory display. The Workshop on Auditory Display is intended to provide an open forum to bridge the gulfs between research and design, science and technology, and perception and acoustics. Papers and poster/demonstrations are solicited for all aspects of auditory display including (but not limited to) the following topics:
These themes can be approached from several perspectives. Submissions of research efforts should include the objectives, methodology, and results. Submissions of applications and designs should include the goals, users, development process, and evaluation. Descriptions of commercial products are eligible, but sales and marketing activities are not appropriate. Audio demonstrations are an important component of the Workshop and are strongly encouraged. Special audio-visual requirements beyond the following will be considered but not guaranteed:
Technical papers and posters are invited for submission; the workshop
program committee will select approximately eight 20-minute lecture presentations
and ten poster presentations. Submissions include a 200-word abstract to
be published in the ASA/EAA program and a 4-page paper to be published
in a CD-ROM available for purchase at the conference . Submissions will
be peer-reviewed; note that the deadline is earlier than for the abstracts
for the main ASA/EAA technical sessions. The abstract format should follow
ASA guidelines (see the
main conference CFP from ASA
Proposals are invited for demonstrations at an informal reception where exploratory concepts as well as techniques and tools for auditory display may be presented. Submissions include a 200-word abstract to be published in the program and a 2-page description to be published in the CD-ROM proceedings (see instructions below). Demonstration submissions will be evaluated on the basis of their innovation, relevance, scientific contribution, and potential logistic constraints. (NOTE: Please be prepared to provide your own equipment/computers for your demonstration. Special facilities requests will be considered but not guaranteed.)
An invited panel composed of representatives from research labs, academics and industry will also be organized around the theme of future needs and directions in auditory display research.
Submissions should be made via email to dbegault@mail.arc.nasa.gov with the words "Berlin99 Workshop Paper/Poster Submission" in the subject line. In addition, mail 6 copies of the 200-word abstract and 4-page technical paper to
The deadline for receipt of both email and hardcopy versions is JULY 28, 1998; no late or incomplete submissions will be accepted. Please indicate information in the following order in the email submission:
Six copies of the information in items 1-7 should be provided in the regular mail submission, attached to the front of 6 copies of the abstract and paper.
The instructions for submission of a demonstration are identical to those outlined for the papers, with the following differences:
(Deadlines will be strictly enforced):
July 28, 1998: Deadline for submission of technical papers and demonstration proposals
September 4, 1998: Notification of acceptance to authors via email; NOTE: If we cannot accept your paper for the Workshop, you have the option of submitting your 200-word abstract to the main meeting sessions by Sept. 11. See the main conference CFP from ASA for abstract submission instructions.
September 11, 1998: Abstracts of accepted papers sent to ASA by Papers Chair Final copies of accepted papers for the CD-ROM will be due at or near the time of the conference. Please see the main conference CFP from ASA for details.
