JOINT ICAD/ASA/EAA WORKSHOP

A one-day Workshop on Auditory Display, jointly organized by the International Community for Auditory Display (ICAD), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), and the European Acoustics Association (EAA), will be held on Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the same location as the main ASA-EAA conference .

ICAD is a not-for-profit corporation created to support research, education and community formation in the emerging field of auditory display. The Workshop on Auditory Display is intended to provide an open forum to bridge the gulfs between research and design, science and technology, and perception and acoustics. Papers and poster/demonstrations are solicited for all aspects of auditory display including (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Sonification (data representation through audio)
  • Audio on the World Wide Web
  • Audio Access for the Visually Impaired
  • Sound in Immersive Environments
  • Sound in Human-Computer User Interfaces
  • Tools and Systems to support auditory display
  • These themes can be approached from several perspectives. Submissions of research efforts should include the objectives, methodology, and results. Submissions of applications and designs should include the goals, users, development process, and evaluation. Descriptions of commercial products are eligible, but sales and marketing activities are not appropriate. Audio demonstrations are an important component of the Workshop and are strongly encouraged. Special audio-visual requirements beyond the following will be considered but not guaranteed:

  • overhead projector slide projector
  • stereo speaker system
  • DAT player
  • audio cassette deck
  • projection of computer screen (please bring your own computer/laptop if possible)
  • Video cassette player in either VHS or PAL format
  • TECHNICAL PAPER/POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Technical papers and posters are invited for submission; the workshop program committee will select approximately eight 20-minute lecture presentations and ten poster presentations. Submissions include a 200-word abstract to be published in the ASA/EAA program and a 4-page paper to be published in a CD-ROM available for purchase at the conference . Submissions will be peer-reviewed; note that the deadline is earlier than for the abstracts for the main ASA/EAA technical sessions. The abstract format should follow ASA guidelines (see the main conference CFP from ASA ) and include all information normally required; do not send your workshop abstract directly to the ASA or EAA. Papers should follow formatting guidelines for the CD-ROM described in the main conference CFP from ASA. Although your preference for lecture or poster presentation is requested, we cannot guarantee your preference due to time constraints.

    DEMONSTRATION RECEPTION

Proposals are invited for demonstrations at an informal reception where exploratory concepts as well as techniques and tools for auditory display may be presented. Submissions include a 200-word abstract to be published in the program and a 2-page description to be published in the CD-ROM proceedings (see instructions below). Demonstration submissions will be evaluated on the basis of their innovation, relevance, scientific contribution, and potential logistic constraints. (NOTE: Please be prepared to provide your own equipment/computers for your demonstration. Special facilities requests will be considered but not guaranteed.)

    PANEL DISCUSSION

An invited panel composed of representatives from research labs, academics and industry will also be organized around the theme of future needs and directions in auditory display research.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS:

Submissions should be made via email to dbegault@mail.arc.nasa.gov with the words "Berlin99 Workshop Paper/Poster Submission" in the subject line. In addition, mail 6 copies of the 200-word abstract and 4-page technical paper to

The deadline for receipt of both email and hardcopy versions is JULY 28, 1998; no late or incomplete submissions will be accepted. Please indicate information in the following order in the email submission:

  • 1. Name of Primary author for correspondence
  • 2. Name of secondary authors
  • 3. Correspondent's mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers
  • 4. Correspondent's email address
  • 5. All audio and visual technical requirements (overhead projector, slide projector, DAT playback, etc.)
  • 6. Description of audio demonstrations, if any (including length).
  • 7. Preference for paper or poster presentation
  • 8. Plain ASCII version (within the body of the email text) of 200-word abstract, formatted according to ASA guidelines (See the ASA conference CFP).
  • 9. Plain ASCII version (within the body of the email text) of 4 page paper. Use text placeholders for illustrations (e.g., "insert Figure 1 here").
  • 10. If possible, attach all of the above information in 1-9 to the email message as a MS Word document (version 5.1/6.0/6.0.1/98 for Macintosh or Word 7.0/Word 97 for PC). MIME or BinHex encoding is preferred. WinZip archive documents are OK, but do not send uuencoded documents or use other forms of compression. If necessary, this can be sent as a separate email message.
  • Six copies of the information in items 1-7 should be provided in the regular mail submission, attached to the front of 6 copies of the abstract and paper.

    SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTERS/DEMONSTRATIONS

The instructions for submission of a demonstration are identical to those outlined for the papers, with the following differences:

  • 1) Type "Berlin99 Workshop Poster/Demonstration Submission" in the subject line of the email
  • 2) instead of a 4- page paper, send a 2-page extended summary of the demonstration to be presented.
  • IMPORTANT DATES

    (Deadlines will be strictly enforced):
